Gmail has been out for almost four years now. Do we really still need an invite link for friends in the interface? The program, although still in beta (is this just a joke now within Google), is open to the public so anyone can open up as many accounts as they want.
A big part of Gmail's success has been its clutter free interface, which Google seems religious about. I think a big overhaul of the Gmail interface is coming soon (similar to Google Docs) and the "Invite a friend" link will disappear with it, but it seems strange to me that Gmail has gone completely unchanged since its inception. I mentioned a few other small changes that Gmail could implement before the overhaul. Throw this one in there (and replace it with a "Search Contacts" button, please).

Someone told me at a party this weekend that Gmail registration requires a valid cell phone number now. The "activation link" comes as a text message.
I think you can get the activation link via email now that they've opened up registration.
I just sent you a Gmail invite. Happy Birthday! (Interesting side note: Gmail doesn't seem to care if you send an invite to another Gmail address.)
They also don't care if you send the Gmail invite to your own Gmail address which you are sending from....although it might make the universe explode if you do so.
