The Future Of Email

To borrow a phrase from a friend, I'm YouTubing it in on this post, which makes me think said friend should write a Wikipedia entry about the use of the word "YouTube" as a verb.

Look out Gmail....the future of email is here. Who needs conversation view or labels when you've got airpla....wait, what?

Follow Up Blogger Comments By Email

I'm so glad that Blogger just implemented this feature into its comments system. I was currently adding blog post comment RSS feeds (huh?) that I contributed to to my growing and somewhat disgusting (OK, I admit addiction) number of RSS feeds (currently 137). That messy process is now over and I'm happy to have all of the follow up comments invade my inbox. Two positives I see from this option.

  1. Blogging and commenting is a very good medium for questions and answers. You've got "person A" interested enough in something to actually write about it just because. You've got "person B" who enjoys "person A's" writing enough to read it consistently. A match made in heaven for conversation. Responses to questions seem to show up quicker when you're asking about something that you know the other person has legitimate interest in....amazing concept.
  2. A friend of mine pointed out that blogging is an excellent way to keep up with friends and I've found this to be true. I would consider most of my feeds to be niche news feeds but a few are personal blogs of friends, and it's nice to see what they are doing every once in a while (without bothering them and trying to explain Jaiku, Pownce, or Twitter).
Leave a comment and try out the email follow up feature. :-)

Gmail Invites....Still?

Gmail has been out for almost four years now. Do we really still need an invite link for friends in the interface? The program, although still in beta (is this just a joke now within Google), is open to the public so anyone can open up as many accounts as they want.

A big part of Gmail's success has been its clutter free interface, which Google seems religious about. I think a big overhaul of the Gmail interface is coming soon (similar to Google Docs) and the "Invite a friend" link will disappear with it, but it seems strange to me that Gmail has gone completely unchanged since its inception. I mentioned a few other small changes that Gmail could implement before the overhaul. Throw this one in there (and replace it with a "Search Contacts" button, please).

"It makes the big country breakfast portable."

There is a fine line between something being funny and something being well, repulsive. I think the Country Breakfast Burrito from Hardee's is beginning to cross that line. This article could have been published in The Onion and I would have laughed. OK, OK....I still laughed....and I started to wonder what other entire meals could be "made portable" and wrapped inside a giant tortilla.

Boxes, Boxes & More Boxes

For some reason I seem to accumulate boxes inside my closet that once contained new, fresh electronics. Now empty, the boxes are worthless and I never use them to repackage the devices, but for some reason I hang on to them. Keeping the Xbox 360 box is understandable as the console seems to have a life span of about six months at which point it suffers a quick red death and requires a return to the manufacturer. The rest of the lot is my weakness. I'm not one to accumulate things, in fact I hate it. I like my life to be streamlined almost to the point of being nomadic. I try to get rid of stuff if I haven't used it for a couple of months because I never miss it once it's gone, but the gadget boxes tucked away in the dark corners of my home always seem to avoid my cleaning as if they're hiding from me. I know where they are, I just don't know why they are still there and why they have survived several moves. If anyone shares this sickness or has a rational explanation as to why I seem to hang on to this one specific, worthless item, let me know because I plan on getting rid of the boxes soon and I think I might need them shortly after that.

L VS R....Brain

Do you see the dancer turning clockwise or counter-clockwise?

According to an article in the Herald Sun if you see her turning clockwise, you are right brain dominant. Counter-clockwise? You're left brain dominant.

I can only see her turning clockwise and I'm really trying to see both.

HD?

I've noticed that the high definition cable service that I'm paying for isn't really what the cable company says it is. It's bad enough that a lot of the content is extremely compressed, but what about when the provider lies about the content they serve you. When is an HD channel....well, HD? When at least half of its programming is in high definition....a few shows....how about a couple shows with 16 X 9 stretched SD content? Seinfeld in "HD" looks a lot more like the fish on the right up there. Upscaled content is not HD content no matter how much the cable company wants people to think it is. I don't mind that older shows (like Seinfeld) are not in HD, but they shouldn't be advertised as such.

Feed Reading 101

I've been praising feed readers and Google Reader in particular for a while now. They make managing online content A LOT easier. I've tried explaining what feed readers are and what their benefits are, but I think this video does a much better job.
